![]() ![]() I dived into these 4 books w & what a fun journey this was into Murakami’s beginnings! Wind/Pinball was a bit odd & made little sense, but I really enjoyed Sheep Chase/Dance, which finally had plots & felt like the Murakami we know today. In these 4 books, I could see him mind-dumping various topics, themes, & ideas that he’d revisit & expand upon in his later novels & short stories. That being said, it was fun to go back to where it all started. (Well, I guess technically it’s his voice filtered through a translator.) I love that Murakami is predictable w respect to his writing style & tone, his gratuitous sex scenes, his homage to music, a mention of spaghetti or a well, a wartime memory, or a cameo by a neighborhood cat… & yet, he is one of the few authors who consistently surprises me by his use of magical realism & random plot points. His writing style is distinct & familiar. Reading Murakami is like visiting an old friend. The fourth book, Dance Dance Dance, was written a bit later & is a sequel to Sheep Chase.Īlthough I’m not entirely sure what the point of Wind/Pinball was, I was able to recognize Murakami’s voice. ![]() Murakami started his writing journey with the Rat trilogy: (1) Hear the Wind Sing (2) Pinball, 1973 & (3) A Wild Sheep Chase. ![]()
